One of the best things about old school forums was forum game culture, and we want to bring a piece of that back to the VAULT. Think of classic collaborative fiction like the original Somethingawful Slenderman thread, and that’s the kind of energy we want to bring. This is a place for experimentation.
General rules:
The initial concept is set by the first poster, but anyone may contribute to it and nobody has singular ‘rights’ to the story or a definitive say on the direction it takes. The members of the VAULT decide where the story moves.
This is not a roleplay space. You can make more than one entry, but each entry should be its own micro-story or OOC brainstorming and suggestion.
Stories created in the collaborative space including characters, creatures, settings, etc. are common property. Anyone can write their own stories inspired by works in a collab thread, including people who didn’t participate in the original thread and people outside the VAULT.
Follow improv rules: ‘yes, and’ or, sparingly, ‘no, but.’ Try to stick with the same tone and core ideas throughout. Don’t go out of your way to destroy or unwrite what other people in the thread have written if you have a different idea. Just give a different perspective, and if the group likes your direction they may roll with it.
Significantly unsportsmanlike behavior will result in being unable to contribute on the Collaboration board.
Content warnings are required at the top of your post. You must give warnings for depictions of: sex, suicide, physical/ psychological abuse, and sexual violence. You may give optional warnings for other potentially upsetting content, at your discretion.
After running their course, a ‘finished’ collaboration will be compiled in a separate thread to canonize it. A poll will be open at that time for users to select the stories and contributions they wish to canonize.
Content rules:
Stories must be fundamentally horror in nature. However, we place no restrictions on the type of horror you can choose to represent! You can write thrillers, horror comedy, scifi horror, 2nd world fantasy horror, erotic horror, as long as the story contains elements of horror, it’s allowed here.
The one exception: no fanfiction. Fanfiction is any writing that uses material like characters, settings, and plots currently held under copyright, OR fiction about currently living celebrities. Feel free to write stories inspired by copyrighted properties and current events, but this is not the place to post straight up fanfiction.
Stories can be from 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person perspective. Your main character can be any human, animal, alien, monster, god, or any other being living or dead. If you have an idea you love, we want to support you writing it.
We accept some extreme content in the VAULT as long as it is tagged appropriately, but use your head when writing depictions of sexual violence, pedophilia, bigotry, and so on. If your story glorifies these things, your thread may be locked pending deletion.
Please limit the use of slurs. Foul language and insults are acceptable, but when possible slurs should be censored in some way.
